  • COURSE AGENDA

Shelf Arthroplasty of Dorsal Acetabular Rim with 3D Printed Personalized Titanium Implant (3DHIP) for Young Dogs with Hip Dysplasia

Learning Objectives

  • Understand shelf arthroplasty for treatment of hip dysplasia
  • Define inclusion criteria to recommend acetabular rim extension in young dogs with hip dysplasia characterized by hip laxity
  • Learn surgical anatomy for the shelf arthroplasty procedure
  • Perform acetabular rim extension in dogs with a personalized 3D printed titanium shelf implant (3D HIP)
  • Learn about imaging aspects of shelf arthroplasty
  • Understand the workflow for 3D HIP: from patient inclusion → implant fabrication → to surgery

Key Learning Points

  • Shelf arthroplasty using a personalized 3D printed titanium implant is a safe and feasible technique to treat hip laxity in young dogs
  • Strict inclusion criteria for 3D HIP in dogs with hip dysplasia are important for successful outcomes
  • The use of intra-operative fluoroscopy to confirm correct shelf alignment with the acetabular rim is advised
  • Shelf arthroplasty using 3D HIP is less invasive than pelvic osteotomy like DPO/TPO.
  • 3D HIP allows bilateral application in one operative session
  • 3D HIP is characterized by fast recovery, early return of normal pain-free locomotion and minimal implant complications
